Sayed M. Bateni is a distinguished Professor of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, and also a faculty member of the Water Resources Research Center. He earned his PhD from MIT in 2011, after completing MS and BS degrees in civil engineering in Iran. His research emphasizes earth remote sensing, land–atmosphere interactions, and hydrologic data assimilation—often enhanced by AI and optimization techniques. Over the years, he has secured substantial external funding from agencies such as USDA, USGS, DOT, FEMA, and HI‑EMA, and was awarded a 2020 Fulbright Scholarship to conduct groundbreaking water research in Qatar (cee.hawaii.edu). Among his current initiatives are a real-time irrigation scheduling tool for Hawaii, Guam, and American Samoa; a novel tropical evapotranspiration estimation approach; and wildland fire risk forecasting software for Hawaiʻi (wrrc.hawaii.edu).
Beyond his research, Prof. Bateni is a highly regarded educator, teaching a broad range of courses in fluid mechanics, hydraulics, hydrology, and remote sensing applications, including CEE 320 (Fluid Mechanics Fundamentals) and advanced graduate seminars (cee.hawaii.edu). With a prolific publication record—encompassing satellite data assimilation for snowpack monitoring, AI-driven scour-depth prediction, and evapotranspiration modeling—his work has garnered over 4,600 citations and an h-index of 38 (scholar.google.com). Students praise his engaging lectures and commitment to helping them excel, reflecting his dual dedication to innovation and teaching excellence (ratemyprofessors.com).
